Day 5
In the unit plan Let’s Get Steampunk’d, the students will be doing 3 lessons which investigate drawing, planning, collage, 2D and 3D projects. It will expose them to the work of some assemblage and collage artists. The unit is focused on the idea of transformation, found object work and deconstruction/reconstruction in making art. The students will experience how to uses mechanical tools to disassemble everyday objects and reform them into a creature which means something to them. Through this process over 4 or 5 class periods, they will learn the importance of planning and contemplate the reasons artists use found objects in relationships of artistic inspiration and cultural significance.
In today’s learning experience students… continued to work collaboratively to deconstruct, record, and plan. Students demonstrated safety techniques by passing the "safe tools" test. Students began to transform objects by combining images together in their sketchbook.
Essential Understanding
To take apart common household items using workshop tools, then categorize those pieces and parts to have a new purpose in their art. Working in groups or alone to create a creature.
Key Concepts
Planning, Found Objects, Properties when using new media, Invention, Categorize, planning and Ideation
Skills
Use workshop tools to disassemble mechanical objects; Categorize items to help inspire; Plan a piece of artwork; Explain steps of planning, Collaborative planning. Good studio habits
Art Focus
Deconstruction, Drawing, Planning, Ideation
Literacy Focus
Be able to discuss safety techniques; Document personal discoveries while deconstructing in sketchbook.

Essential Understanding
- Artists categorize ideas for inspiration to create art
- Artists deconstruct then reconstruct ideas and materials to create something new that allows for interpretation

Documentation
Students continued to work today on deconstructing and categorizing materials in their sketchbook. They took turns doing different jobs such as the deconstructor, recorder, or collector. Students began to collect materials they deconstructed or gathered from the outside boxes, then they worked on recording the information in their sketchbook. They circled the item that it once was, then underlined what it could be. They worked in groups to deconstruct, but they had to make the choice to be constructing their sculpture together in a group or doing it by themselves.

The day started with some clearer explanation from our instructors Linda and Asia. Linda showed Tom's class some examples of how to organize sketchbooks, and also showed some samples of the finished product and the steps to get there. Asia revisited the PowerPoint, going more in depth with vocabulary and had students actively name them. She showed specific images and asked them to relate the images to abstract and form while defining them.
In the image at the right we see Lucas drawing out his chosen pieces and working out how they may fit together to make his creature. The students are getting ready to see how their planning and ideas will work out when we construct them back together with Glue, wire and tape next week!
To make sure all students were using tools correctly, we gave everyone a formative assessment having students demonstrate tool safety. They had to use righty-tighty, lefty-loosey, cut wire, and show how to hold both pliers and screwdrivers. Students were able to get direct feedback from their teacher, and teachers were able to understand where students were at in terms of experience.
Students took turns taking apart an object, recording in their sketchbook, and working together to come up with ideas about what things could be. Students gave a lot of thought to their ideation, trying to decipher what they could make out of the stuff they took apart.
Some students struggled with staying with their jobs. Collaboration is one of the 21st century skills, and it was definitely tested this week as they struggled with balancing what each member of the group wanted.
Students finished off by cleaning up their space and putting all the materials they wanted to keep in their own boxes. Each group takes responsibility for their own space, making sure everything is in order.
REFLECTION
One of the more important aspects of their lesson today involved classroom community and collaboration. As the students began to realize the actual creatures they wanted to create, many of the students who were working together had unique idea's, it created some struggles. Categorizing, sharing and redirecting their planning was essential to the students moving forward. At the end of class we had some rearranged groups and some students choosing to work alone.
