Welcome to this year’s 4th and 5th grade Art Blog for PSD Lab School! We are excited to get to know all our students and the faculty.Thank you for stopping by and seeing what Tom and Alicia’s Classes are doing this semester in art class! This year we get a special treat…students get to put on their invention caps and create their very own mechanical creature! But that isn’t all…they have to deconstruct old “junk” first! Just like local artist Bill Swet, we shall be taking apart broken things and making cool creatures out of them. Broken bike gears and chains become the bones of a dinosaur, or the motherboard of an old computer becomes a funky cat — the world is at their fingertips, and they get to use found art and assemblage to make it all come together.
Students will develop many skills that will transfer to other classes, such as basic tool use, using creative reasoning, collaboration, planning and self-discovery!
We are so very excited teach these lessons, and we hope the students are excited as well! There are three of us that will be rotating between Tom and Alicia’s class, so students will get to know all three of us. Please read below to find out more about each of us.
My name is Linda Roth. I am currently receiving my Art Education Degree from Colorado State University and enjoying the outstanding lifestyle of FOCO! If I am not on the CSU campus you will find me enjoying time with my own children, bike riding, walking our dog at Horsetooth Reservoir or working on some artwork at home. I love teaching as much as I love art. I have worked as a dance teacher for over twenty years and a professional artist as well. I consider it a great privilege to be able to share my passion, for the arts, with my students. I am so excited to spend this semester with the wonderful students and faculty at Lab School. It’s going to be an amazing time!
My name is Kaitlyn Birdsall, and I am a post-bachelor CSU student getting my art education license. I graduated from CSU with a Painting and Art History degree back in 2011. While I love painting, I also enjoy all other mediums! I have spent the past year teaching in Denver at a school that did not offer any art classes, which really made me realize just how important it is to give students the opportunity to do art! I am excited to teach my passion for art and spread the word about how important art education is. When I’m not in the studio painting, I will probably be at home cooking up a delicious meal, watching my favorite tv show, and playing with my two kitties. I love to travel and do so whenever I have the possibility! I am quite excited to spend this semester with the students at the lab school, and I know that we will have a great adventure!
My name is Asia Skipp, and I am studying art education at the wonderful campus of Colorado State University with an emphasis in Drawing. I love all art practices such as Painting, Pottery, Photography, and Sculpture just to name a few. In my spare time you will find me enjoying a roller coaster ride at Disney World, dancing to my favorite song on Just Dance, or playing a heated game of Bippity Bippity Bop with friends. I want to make my teaching experience as much fun for my students as it is for me to teach it! I look forward to teaching art at the High School level when I graduate.
